Windows Performance Monitoring: Part 1This is a nice video that discusses the basics of performance monitoring in windows. This is actually a live class that I taught to a group of developer/admins and just decided to record it. We got cut off there at the end for time, but the next version is coming soon. There’s a lot of stuff on perfmon counters, Task Manager, command line tools for monitoring and killing tasks, loading and unloading perfmon counters, etc. There’s lots of good stuff in here.1:17:0505/20/2008Windows Performance MonitoringSean McCown
Windows Performance Monitoring: Part 2This is the continuation of the live presentation I did a couple weeks ago. This one covers disk counters, memory architecture, and counters.1:04:0006/03/2008Windows Performance MonitoringSean McCown
Introduction to SchemasThis is an excellent video that explains what schemas are and why you should care.7:4506/18/2008 Sean McCown

Schemas: Ownership Chaining and Schema OwnershipContinuing with schemas, here I talk about ownership chaining and how schema ownership effects them. I start with the basics of chaining and then get into the meat of the topic right after that.22:4802/09/2009 Sean McCown
PowerShell BasicsHere I start the first in an exciting new series of vids on PowerShell both in Windows and SQL. I go over how to download PowerShell and some of the command basics. It’s just an intro so I’ll get into specific tasks in later vids.20:2407/23/2008 Sean McCown
Scripting DB Objects in PowerShellContinuing with PowerShell I thought I’d show you something really cool you can do that would make a difference in your shop right away. So here I’m showing you how to script your tables, etc in PowerShell so you can automate them and add them to your processes. This is an excellent example of how cool and useful this scripting language is. I hope it makes you as excited about PowerShell as it does me.21:4407/24/2008 Sean McCown
Scripting DB Objects in Powershell (Advanced Topics)Here I get past the basics of using the Script() method and take you to how to recreate some of the scripts you can create in SSMS by instantiating a scriptingOptions object and passing it to the method.19:5508/23/2008 Sean McCown
Working with PSDrive in PowerShellHere I go over what PSDrive is and how to work with it. I also go into aliases again as well as how to find help in powershell. We’re still covering important basics here because I can write scripts for you all day long, but you’ll never go far unless you can understand them yourself.13:3308/07/2008 Sean McCown
Powershell with –NoExitHere I show you how to get around the problem of your Powershell window closing down when you call it from either the run window or from other programs. If you get errors or want to see something that was printed on the screen it’s quite often impossible unless you startup PowerShell or dos first. This way you can call your scripts in a way that allows you to see the results no matter what. It’s a very simple technique, but very useful.5:1308/25/2008 Sean McCown
Change SQL Server Job OwnerThis is a really cool method for changing SQL job owners or any job property I would imagine. It really simplifies it from using SQL syntax. So learn this method and it’ll be your friend for years to come.18:2809/11/2008 Sean McCown
Grant DB PermissionsThis is a beautiful bit of script that allows you to set DB permissions for a user. This is particularly useful for adding a user to multiple DBs on the server. And the code to accomplish this is much shorter than its T-SQL counterpart. If you need a bit more explanation about how this is put together then look at the video for granting schema permissions with Powershell.9:2809/17/2008 Sean McCown
Grant Schema Permissions in PowershellThis is another excellent video that shows the power of powershell in SQL administration. I love this video because it’s a very common scenario and keeps you from writing a SQL cursor. This is one of my favorites.17:5109/20/2008 Sean McCown
Building a Powershell BCP RoutineHere I show you how to build a script that will BCP an entire group of tables and even log the progress. You can make the routine as simple or as rich as you like. These are the building blocks of such a process and will take you far in your endeavors. There are several techniques taught in this video so pay attention to the details and you’ll come away with a richer knowledge of powershell.31:2109/30/2008 Sean McCown
Powershell ProfilesHere I finally address how to connect to SQL Server from powershell proper by adding the SQL Server snapins. Then I show you how to add them to your profile so you don’t have to add them manually every time you start PowerShell.8:1504/23/2009 Sean McCown
Beginning Powershell for DBAs 1This is an excellent video that explains what schemas are and why you should care.1:27:3802/24/2009Beginning Powershell for DBAsSean McCown

Moving DB FilesMoving database files is easy, but misunderstood. Here I'll show you how to move user DB files using 2 methods.17:3405/09/2008 Sean McCown
Interpreting Disk QueuesDisk queues are a mystery for the majority of DBAs. They may know that they need to look at them, but they have no idea what they mean. Here I’ll show you how to know what you’re looking at to see when your disk queues are too high. This tutorial doesn’t go into how to fix the problem really, it’s more just how to diagnose it.9:4306/02/2008 Sean McCown
Running Websites with AD AccountsThis is an excellent tutorial on how to run a website under a specific AD account so you can use windows authentication in the database. This is a common request and now I’m showing you how to do it start to finish.12:5906/02/2008 Sean McCown
Find Log Space UsedFind out how to query the log space usage for all DBs on the server with a single statement. This is a quick way to get the % of log space used and even program against the results.2:0406/02/2008 Sean McCown
Using ServerPropertyHere I show you the benefit of using ServerProperty() instead of @@Version to find the version of SQL Server you’re on.8:3208/07/2008 Sean McCown
RunAs MagicThis is a really good video on how to use the RunAs utility in windows. There are several scenarios when a DBA/Dev may need to logon to a program with separate credentials and this takes you a good way to getting there. The process is simple, but it comes with some caveats. I don’t even come close to discussing the whole topic here but like I said, it’s an excellent start that takes you past the basics of the right-click.23:5809/04/2008 Sean McCown
Select Into with Identity()This video shows you how to use the Identity() function to create an identity column on the fly during a select into statement. You don’t have to settle for Alter Table anymore.5:2704/23/2009 Sean McCown
Troubleshoot DB Connection with TelnetHere I show you how to trouble a DB connection issue to eliminate the firewall as a suspect. Using telnet you can tell pretty clearly whether or not the access is being blocked by the firewall or not. One thing I didn’t mention in the video is that this works for all DBs and not just SQL Server. And again, you have to verify that the server is actively accepting connections. But this is a really good way to determine whether the firewall is blocking access or not.5:4002/25/2009 Sean McCown
Building SubreportsI got a user question through email and rather write-out how to do this, I just shot him a quick video. So the quality isn't that good, and I used the camera this time, but hey, you either wanna know how to create a subreport or you don't. Hope you like it.14:2402/03/2009 Sean McCown

Connection strings in Package Config FilesHere I show you how to put your data source connection string inside a package configuration XML file. This was inspired by a forum post by a user so I decided to make a video for him.7:4506/24/2008 Sean McCown
Forcing Package FailuresThis one was by user request to show how you can compare the counts of 2 tables and use it to force the package to fail if the counts don’t match. This comes in handy when comparing the counts of the source and destination tables after your load. The scenario is specific but can be modified to anything you like.13:2006/27/2008 Sean McCown
Execute SQL Task with ParametersThis video discusses how to pass parameters to queries and SPs inside the Execute SQL Task. It doesn’t teach the basics of the task. It assumes you already know how to use it. This video is only concerned with passing parameters.7:5605/20/2008 Sean McCown
Row Count TransformHere I discuss how to use the row count transform in SSIS and give you some good advice for naming and working with the variable associated with it.11:0505/22/2008 Sean McCown

Creating Files with ForEach LoopHere I take the intro one step further and show you how to create multiple txt files based off of a looping variable in the ForEach loop container. This is a very common task and I see this question quite a bit in the forums, so I documented it.8:2906/25/2008 Sean McCown
Introduction to Sequence ContainersThis video takes a look at the basics of using the Sequence Container in SSIS. There’s not a lot to it, but it’s a good intro if you don’t know what it is.6:2906/25/2008 Sean McCown
Commenting Tribal Knowledge in SSIS PackagesThere is a lot of tribal knowledge that accumulates in any organization. Here I discuss some ways to document your SSIS packages so you can start to record some of this information. Your packages will be more supportable, easier to update, and you’ll take hours or sometimes days off of a re-design or support effort. You won’t be sorry you started doing this.29:2409/21/2008 Sean McCown
SSIS BasicsThis is a live presentation I gave recently. Here is a bare bones bottom of the barrel discussion on SSIS. This is for complete beginners. I’m explaining in this session, the simplest of basics on SSIS and BIDS. I give a couple of basics demos. This is the beginning of what I’ll build on in the next couple sessions as we get deeper into the specifics of this cool product. So if you know absolutely nothing about SSIS then this is the place for you.1:06:2304/23/2009 Sean McCown
SSIS Basics 2: Flatfile OlympicsHere we’re just going to jump into SSIS and do some real practical work. We’re going to learn all about taking things to/from multiple files. This is not to be missed because there are some really good concepts here that will carry over to many other tasks in SSIS. I specifically chose these operations because they teach such a wide variety of skills. So come learn how to get a gold medal in flatfiles.1:02:1511/04/2008 Sean McCown
Basic HTML for DBAsAfter my last video I got some emails saying that not all DBAs already know HTML. So I decided to teach some basic HTML that DBAs can use in their daily jobs. So if you’re a DBA and you’ve always wanted to tackle HTML, don’t worry… it’s easier than it sounds.35:3510/09/2008 Sean McCown
HTML Styles: Part 1Here I continue with the HTML basics video by showing you a better way to do styles. I hinted about this in the basics video so I decided to go ahead and do it. I’ll show you the ultimate way to do styles in the next one. All methods have their uses and we’ll get into that sometime too. For now though, just enjoy learning header styles.16:1904/23/2009 Sean McCown

Get a Specific Method in PowershellSometimes the list of properties and methods is too big to sift through when you do a get-member on an object. Here I'll show you how to cut down the list to a more manageable size so you can find exactly what you're looking for.3:3709/13/2009 Sean McCown
Add User to Windows Group with PowershellI love this video because it's so unusual to find something like it in the DBA community. We're quite often called on to do things outside of our direct job descriptions and this is something I have to do a lot. So I'm showing you how to add a user to a Windows group so you don't have to TS into a lot of boxes to add someone.13:1109/14/2009 Sean McCown
Fix SSIS Pkg Import ErrorsThis is a live troubleshooting video. I had an error importing an SSIS pkg so I turned on the camera and worked the issue live for you. A couple of the symptoms are not being able to copy tasks inside Visual Studio and getting an error about not being able to serialize the runtime object. This is one of those cases where at least being exposed to the types of things that can go wrong will help you come up with a solution even when you've never seen a specific error.4:5609/14/2009 Sean McCown
Midnight: No Moving SchemaOK guys, here we're talking about no moving schema. If you don't know what that is, then watch this and see not only what it is, but what problems it can cause. We also discuss SQL Saturday a bit.23:1709/18/2009 Sean McCown and Jennifer McCown
Midnight: Managing Tasks 1 of 2This one was rather fun because it was another one of those nights when were were both rather punchy. HOwever, amidst all the messing around and backtracking we did manage to talk about something. We talked about managing tasks, moving schema, and give a brief intro to project Madison. I'm sure there's some other stuff in there too but I can't remember everything. Oh yeah, we even touch on SQL upgrade too.16:2509/26/2009DBAsAtMidnightManagingTasksSean McCown and Jennifer McCown
Midnight: Managing Tasks 2 of 2Here's the exciting conclusion to the 1st one.23:2909/26/2009DBAsAtMidnightManagingTasksSean McCown and Jennifer McCown
Working from Home: Part 1ALERT!!!! We had a lot of fun making this video but we covered some topics we're passionate about so in a couple patches the language gets a little rough. There's a normal amount of cursing but I do manage to slip up and drop an F-bomb once. So if you're offended easily then perhaps you should skip this one. I try not to do that, but sometimes it happens. Anyway, this one is a great time where we talk about the use of DBs in various customer service companies and how nobody uses them to their fullest. As well we also talk about office dress codes, hot chicks, and other stuff. Our daughter makes an appearance as well. So yeah, big fun.17:2009/30/2009DBAsAtMidnightWorkingFromHomeSean McCown and Jennifer McCown

Buck, Paul, Joe, and Louis: 1 of 7RATED R for language content. Whenever you get Sean and Joe in the same room the language goes out the window. It's very entertaining though. There's a story behind this video. We had a scheduling mishap with Joe the day before, and when we were setting up for Paul he told us that Joe was in the speaker room with Louis. So he called and got them down there and we just turned it into a group interview.14:5511/22/2009DBAsAtMidnightGroupInterviewSean McCown and Jennifer McCown

Clustering 101SPEAKER: Kaylan Yella. We were fortunate enough to get someone of his skill to teach us about clustering. The basics take a lot of time so we didn't get to any demos during the usergroup session, but Kal was nice enough to film the demos on his own afterwards and they're posted right after this one. So start here and learn the basics, then go to the other vids and learn how to put it all together. Thanks Kal.1:29:3011/19/2009NTSSUGClustering101Sean McCown
